Supercar vs Hypercar:
What’s the Difference?
Understanding performance, technology, design and exclusivity
A supercar is a high-performance sports car with exotic styling, usually producing 500 to 800 horsepower, built in the hundreds or low thousands. A hypercar sits above it: extreme power, usually 900 horsepower or more, extreme speed, and production runs of a few dozen cars or fewer, often at a price to match.
The line between the two isn’t always sharp, and a handful of cars in this collection sit right on it. The Gumpert Apollo is described by most sources as a supercar but posted numbers, and a Nürburgring record, that genuinely earn it hypercar status. The Arash AF10 is a supercar in its standard 550-hp form, but its hybrid variant claims over 2,000 hp and pushes toward hypercar territory. The Puritalia Berlinetta claims nearly 1,000 hp yet is often called a hybrid supercar in the press. Where a car like this appears on this site reflects a judgment call based on its most common configuration and how its own manufacturer talks about it, not a hard rule.
